Gurez Valley

Get Me There

Highly Scenic

Gurez Valley is a place of high scenic beauty that does not really get the attention that it truly deserves.

At an average altitude of 8,000 feet (2,400 meters), the valley is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It has diverse fauna and wildlife including the Himalayan brown bear and the snow leopard.

The vistas and the natural beauty of the mountains that you see here are very different than what you will see elsewhere.

The Kishanganga River flows through the valley before merging into the Jhelum River near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan. Razdan Pass is the only high-altitude pass between Srinagar and Gurez.

A Surreal Experience

Gurez, is a fairyland, surreal place. Here, the sky is more blue, the pine trees are more green, the river changes colour from turquoise green to silver.

While describing the Gurez Valley, Walter R. Lawrence writes in his book The Valley of Kashmir, "The valley is extremely picturesque, as the river comes dashing along through a rich meadow, partly covered with lindens, walnut and willow trees, while the mountains on either side present nothing but a succession of most abrupt precipices, and Alpine lodges, covered with fir trees."
